Pearlie Lizzie Emaline Gammel was born February 6, 1892 in Mississippi to Robert Thomas Pollack Gammel and Mary Ollie Markle. She was the oldest of 8 children and was named after her mother's mother, Sarah Emaline Miller and her mother's younger sister, Sarah Lizzie Isabel Markle. As a young girl in school her mother, Mary Ollie was taught to learn her lessons by singing them. She taught Pearlie to sing praises when she blessed her meals. This is something she did for every meal her entire life. On September 6, 1914 she married James William Albert "Will" Miles and they had three daughters, Ollie Mae Miles b.October 2, 1915 d.October 16, 2001 (who was named after both of her grandmothers), Clarice Beatrice Miles b. October 22, 1918 d. June 4, 1977, and Ruby Jewel Miles b. November 5, 1927 d.October 16, 2010. She was tall, 5'10" with long black hair and blue eyes. Well into her eighties everyday she would still sit down and take down her hair and braids. Then she'd comb it all out and braid it back into two braids tying the ends with bread ties and rolling the braids onto her head. I think it was around 1969 when mama(that's what all the family called her) was in the Baptist hospital on Union Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee for gallbladder surgery. There was a lady in the room next to her who's name was Mills who had had a stroke. Anyhow, the charts and meds were mixed up. She wound up in a comma(not sure how long) Which caused nearly complete blindness. She never regained her sight. It seemed her health declined from that point. It wasn't long before she and William moved into the house with their oldest daughter, Ollie Mae at 3827 Prescott Rd., Memphis, Tn. It was there with her husband Will and her daughter by her side that she passed away.
