The son of the late John and Ollie Leslie Hayes. He was a retired foreman with Reichold Chemical Co. and was a member of Picketville Baptist Church . Mr. Hayes was a US Army veteran having served during World War II.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Hayes was predeceased by brothers, Ben Hayes and Allen Hayes.
