Mrs. J.W. DeWeese, 96, whose home had been 1747 Lamar Ave., died Tuesday at McCuistion Hospital at 11:20 a.m.

In ill health some time, she was admitted there after a heart attack last week.

Her funeral Thursday at 2 p.m. at Fry & Gibbs Funeral Home, will be held by the Rev. James Semple of First Baptist Church, where she was a member, and the Rev. Richard Poteet, pastor of Harlandale Presbyterian Church in San Antonio. Interment will be made in Evergreen Cemetery.

Relatives are at the home of a daughter, Mrs. John W. Williams, 2111 Simpson St.

Daughter of Robert and Permelia (Craft) Ratliff, Mrs. DeWeese was the former Mattye Ratliff, born in Glory community, Lamar County Nov. 5, 1874.

She married Dec. 27, 1903, at Glory Baptist Church to James W. [William] DeWeese, afterward mayor of Paris, member of the Democratic State Committee and Texas State Insurance commissioner. His death occurred Oct. 30, 1963.

Mrs. DeWeese had attended Lamar and Delta County schools and a private school at Charleston, also teacher's normals, and after receiving a certificate, taught in area schools several years. The DeWeese's moved to Paris, where she had been a member of First Baptist Church since Feb. 1904, being a member of the Kendall Sunday School Class and having taught a class there also. She was the second president of Fourth Ward School's Parent-Teacher Association, member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Joseph Ligon Chapter, and the United Daughters of the Confederacy here and formerly of the Paris Garden Club and Coterie Club.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Williams here and Mrs. Spurgeon Bell, Houston; four grandchildren, Mrs. Norman Davis of Paris, Mrs. Michael Rutherford of Houston, Mrs. Richard Poteet of San Antonio and Spurgeon Bell of Houston; nine great-grandchildren; and a brother, George Ratliff of Abilene.
