He had a great desire to obtain an education, taking every opportunity to learn. He took a correspondence course on law while working in a newspaper office, but he never practiced law. He received letters from his brother David about the Mormon Church. He became interested and traveled to Missouri to see his brother and meet the Prophet Joseph . He was converted and baptized. He returned to Tennessee where he converted his wife. They moved to Nauvoo where he was elected the treasurer of the City of Nauvoo . When the exodus came, he remained behind as one of the three Trustees of the Church to try to settle financial matters. He wrote an account of the martyrdom that was widely distributed. He had been with the Prophet in Carthage jail during the night before the martyrdom. John and his family came west with the first saints and settled in Davis County . They later moved to Springville where they became early settlers of Orangeville . He served a mission to Vermillion in Illinois in 1845 , and was sent on another mission to England from 1852 to 1855 . He held many offices in the church. He was a member of the early Utah legislature and various committees. He also taught school for a time. He was stricken with paralysis in 1882 and he never recovered.
