Frances Grizzard King Dover, 103, of Fruitland Park, Florida passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, September 19, 2006. "Aunt Frances," as she was affectionately known to her large extended family, was born in Nashville, TN, on April 8, 1903, the eldest of five children of Claude Tiller Grizzard and Lillian Carr Grizzard. She attended Ward Belmont College in Nashville, then worked in the family business in Atlanta, before moving to Lakeland in 1929. She was an executive secretary for the owner of a large phosphate mining, citrus, and cattle business. She has shared many interesting tales of the international phosphate business during World War II, along with her experiences counting livestock from the rail of pasture. She was an accomplished musician, and played with jazz bands in the early 1920's. Frances moved to Fruitland Park in 1957 to care for her aging parents. She became Town Clerk of Fruitland Park, with responsibility for running the town's Water Department. She and her second husband, Earl Dover, then Mayor of Fruitland Park, wrote the Charter that lead to Fruitland Park's designation as a City. Frances Dover was a member of the Community United Methodist Church, and for more than 25 years, was their Church Treasurer. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. On the occasion of her 100th birthday in 2003, she was presented with the Key to the City by the mayor of Fruitland Park, along with a proclamation designating April 5 thru 8 as "Frances Grizzard Dover Days" in Fruitland Park. Although she had no children, she is survived by numerous extended cousins, nieces and nephews, and was dearly loved by many in the community. It was her desire that those wishing to do so contribute to the Christian Children's Fund in her memory. Family and friends may call from 10 to 11 AM on Saturday, September 30, 2006 at the church. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, September 30, 2006 at Community United Methodist Church, Fruitland Park, Florida with Revered Michael Fordham officiating. Interment will be at Westview Cemetery, Atlanta, GA. Arrangements have been entrusted to Beyers Funeral Home, Leesburg.
