| Birth: | Jul. 27, 1785 New Dorp Richmond County New York, USA | | Death: | Jan. 29, 1858 New Dorp Richmond County New York, USA |  Congressman. A nephew of William H. Vanderbilt, he attended local schools and became an agent for the Vanderbilt Steamship Line. Barton was active in the militia and rose through the ranks to become a Colonel. He served in the New York Assembly from 1821 to 1822. In 1833 he was a member of the Reception Committee that hosted President Jackson on his visit to New York. He was elected to the US House as a Jacksonian in 1834 and served one term, 1835 to 1837. He was not a candidate for reelection and resumed working for the Vanderbilt Line. (bio by: Bill McKern)
