After completing his education in Hudson, New York schools he moved to California and worked as a gold miner. Upon returning to New York he first operated a Hudson River steamboat, then settled in Catskill, New York and operated a store and leather manufacturing business. In 1874 he was elected as a Democrat to represent New York's 15th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1875 to 1877. He was again elected to Congress in 1882, serving as Chairman of the Committee on Manufactures during his 1883 to 1885 term. After declining to run for reelection in 1884 he returned to his business interests and became involved in banking, insurance and railroads. He was a Member of the New York Assembly in 1888, a Catskill Village Trustee, and an unsuccessful candidate for Congress in 1896. (bio by: Bill McKern)
