Walter Leroy Craig was the son of Earl Lloyd Craig and Martha Ost.

On February 6, 1941, in Alliance, Ohio, Walter enlisted in the United States Army. He was then sent to war with the 37th Infantry Division. He spent four years in the South Pacific at places like Bougainville, Fiji and Manila. Walter was awarded the Purple Heart, Oak Leaf Cluster and a Silver Star for climbing to a balcony under heavy enemy fire to man a machine gun which enabled his company to continue to advance on Luzon. Walter married Frances Klavora on June 5, 1945, in Clyde, Ohio.
