A teenager when his father died, Wynne supported the family as a telegrapher, rising to chief telegraph operator of the Atlantic and Pacific Telegraph Company. He later moved to Washington, D.C. to work as a telegrapher for the Cincinnati Gazette. In 1891 he became personal secretary to US Secretary of the Treasury Charles Foster. At the end of Benjamin Harrison's administration he returned to his career in the newspaper business. In 1902 he was appointed Assistant Postmaster General. He joined Theodore Roosevelt's cabinet as Postmaster General in 1904. Wynne was appointed US Consul General in Great Britain in 1905, a position he held until the end of the Roosevelt administration in 1909. (bio by: Bill McKern)
