Gordon was married to Maebell Hensley and they had one child, a son, David Brice Gilkerson. They were divorced in 1978 and he never remarried.
Gordon was in construction and a hobby gunsmith.
David survives him, as well as his grandchildren Joshua and Jaime Gilkerson; brother Orlin Leroy Gilkerson (Edna), sisters; Donna Joyce Gilkerson Cloyd (Cecil Thomas), Marilyn Sue Gilkerson Jones (Paul Thomas), Patsy Lynn Gilkerson Takacs (Charles) and Janis Karen Gilkerson Kemen (Paul): nieces and nephews; Ronald and Debra Gilkerson, Katrina, Bradley and Gordon Cloyd, Camille, Michelle and Thomas Jones, Elizabeth, Katalin, Susan and Andrew Takacs, and Amanda Kemen: Three half nephew and nieces Donna, Timothy and Sherry Adkins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Danny Merle "Gary" Gilkerson in 1958, and half sister, Anita Genevieve Gilkerson Adkins in 1984.
