Floye Daisy Holbert Smelcer, age 94, of Seymour, passed away on January 17, 2016. She is preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Robert Taylor Smelcer; parents, Thomas and Flora Layman; brothers, Lloyd, Ray and James Holbert; sister, Mattie Holbert Fox; and grandson, David Timothy Kinder. Floye is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Darlene Justice and Jim Wright; daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Gene Flinter; daughter, Angela Humphreys; six grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
She was a former member of Burlington United Methodist Church and her current membership is at Colonial Heights United Methodist Church, where she was an active member of the Quilters and the J. Ray Stuart SS Class. Floye was an avid golfer and enjoyed following UT sports, particularly Lady Vol basketball. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, and being with her family and friends. The family wants to extend a special thanks to the UT Hospice program and all the personnel from the program that helped in the care of Mother, including Pam Herenden, April Bryant and Peggy Gates and weekly care by Mary Spencer and Mary Kilzer. Our heartfelt gratitude goes to her constant companion and caregiver, Sabery Oakes, for the past 4 ½ years.
There will be a celebration of life Thursday, January 21, 2016 at 4:00 PM at Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway. The family will receive friends following the service from 5:00-6:00 PM. Family and close friends will meet Friday, January 22, 2016 at 10:00 AM at Sherwood Memorial Gardens Mausoleum for the entombment service.
