Dred Scott
Birth: 1799
Southampton County
Virginia, USA
Death: Sep. 17, 1858
Saint Louis
St. Louis City
Missouri, USA

Slavery Figure. He was the center figure in the 1857 "Dred Scott" Supreme Court case in which the United States Supreme Court, led by staunch slavery proponent Justice Roger B. Taney, ruled that Dred Scott, as an African American, was not a United States citizen and had no right to sue for his freedom. This decision nullified the Missouri Compromise of 1820 (which was legislation that restricted slavery in certain territories) as being unconstitutional, and contributed to the sectional strife in the 1850s that led to the Civil War. (bio by: Russ Dodge)

RIP, Mr Scott. Your memorial is such an important part of our history. It is a shame people don't remember your struggle to accomplish freedom. You were courageous and will never be forgotten.
