The production was attacked by the Catholic Church and suffered government censorship because of its neo-realistic style. Nieves Conde was born in Segovia, Castilla-Leon, Spain. He worked as a journalist and fought on the Fascist side during the Spanish Civil War. His first film was the gangster drama "Senda Ignorada" (1946). Among his other films are "Angustia" (1947), "Balarrasa" (1951), "Jack El Negro" (co-directed with Julian Duvivier, 1950), "Los Peces Rojos" (1954), "La Legión del Silencio" (1955), "El Inquilino" (1958), "El Diablo También Llora" (1963), "Historia de una Traición" (1972) and "Volvoreta" (1975).
