TUPELO - Charles Graham Vanhorn, 78, died peacefully on Wednesday, January 13, 2016, at Sanctuary Hospice House following an extended battle with COPD. He was born in Vardaman on December 4, 1937, to Johnny Rufus Vanhorn and Sadie L. Clark Vanhorn. Charles married Elizabeth Lanelle Whittle. He was a graduate of Mississippi State University receiving his degree in Petroleum Geology. He was self-employed in the furniture manufacturing industry for many years.
He was the proud grandson of a Civil War Veteran. He collected and catalogued over a 1000 Native American artifacts in Calhoun Co., which he donated to the Cobb Institute at MSU. He was an avid steam train fan, and prolific reader on most any subject. He was a long time member of the MS Valley Flywheel Club and North MS most famous anvil shootist. He loved to joke with folks that if they had lived a good, clean Christian life like he did, they wouldn't be having their troubles.
A service honoring his life will be at 1 p.m., Monday, January 18, 2016, in the Sanctuary of All Saints Episcopal Church with Father Paul Stephens and the Rev. Dr. Billy Walton officiating. A graveside service will follow at 3:30 p.m., at Hillcrest Cemetery in Vardaman. Receiving of friends will be from 11 a.m. to service time in the Parish Hall. Holland Funeral Directors, Tupelo Chapel is entrusted with arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Lanelle Van Horn of Tupelo; two sons, Chuck Van Horn of New Orleans and Rufus Van Horn of Tupelo, and granddaughter, Lauren Van Horn Castro of Santa Monica, California, and a brother of Winona. He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Martha Marie Van Horn.
