| Birth: | Nov. 8, 1837 Allen County Ohio, USA | | Death: | Nov. 17, 1898 Hot Springs Fall River County South Dakota, USA |  US Congressman. At the outbreak of the Civil War he had a law practice and was postmaster of Clarinda, Iowa. He enlisted in the Union Army as a private in Company K, Fourth Regiment, Iowa Volunteer Infantry and rose through the ranks to Lieutenant Colonel. After the war, he resumed the practice of law, was an assessor of internal revenue 1868 to 1871, delegate to the Republican National Convention at Philadelphia in 1872, district attorney 1876 to 1880 and State railroad commissioner in 1881. He was elected as an Independent Republican to the Fiftieth Congress serving from 1887 to 1889. Unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he moved to Hot Springs, South Dakoda, served as mayor in 1895 and 1896, was elected State attorney in 1898 and died while in office.
