Gregory Dexter, patriarch of the Rhode Island Dexter families, was one of the first settlers of Providence, having arrived there about 1644. He was a printer by trade, but served his community in many other ways. A few years after his arrival, he joined the Baptist church, and became its pastor. In civic affairs, he was Providence town clerk for a number of years, representative for Providence in the general assembly, and he succeeded Gov.
