He attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London from 1952 to 1954 and was in the same class as Peter O'Toole, Albert Finney, and Alan Bates. He was known primarily for his stage performances which earned him numerous Tony Award nominations (only win came in 1971 for his performance in "The School for Wives"). He also appeared on both film and television throughout his career with such credits as "Grand Prix" (1966), "Nixon" (1995), "Coronet Blue", "Robin Hood" (1973), and "The Pad and How to Use It" (1966). He was still performing in theatrical productions at the time of his passing.
