Musician was `witness for God'
DEERFIELD TOWNSHIP - Musician Donald C. Kutchback died of cancer Thursday at his Deerfield Township home. He was 67.
As a teacher, trumpet player and church choir director, Mr. Kutchback was "quite a witness for God through his music, smile, personality and everything," said Janice Dowden Kutchback, his wife of 33 years.
He grew up in Greensburg, Ind., and received both a bachelor's and a master's degree in music from Ball State University. During the '50s and '60s he played with the Muncie Symphony Orchestra.
In 1958 he joined the Army and studied at the Naval School of Music. He played first seat trumpet as well as solos with the Army Band, continuing after he was honorably discharged in 1960 and joined the Indiana National Guard.
He performed for Dwight D. Eisenhower's Presidential Inauguration, as well as for Queen Elizabeth II and Gen. Douglas MacArthur.
Mr. Kutchback taught music for the Flatrock-Hawcreek Schools in Hope, Ind., from 1967 to 1969 and was principal and band instructor for the Kings Local School Corp. from 1971 to 1981. He was also choir director for several churches including First Baptist Church of Wyoming and First Baptist Church of Lebanon.
From the time he was 20, and continuing until his death, Mr. Kutchback tuned pianos and was a member of the Cincinnati Piano Tuners Technicians Guild.
He was a Master Mason and Shriner and performed for patients at the Shriners Burns Institute and for nursing homes and retirement communities.
He also played the national anthem at Reds, Cyclones and Mighty Ducks games.
Mr. Kutchback was a maintenance control supervisor for the U.S. Postal Service Service at the Sharonville Bulk Mail Center for 17 years until he retired two years ago.
In addition to his wife, survivors include: a son, Brent Kutchback of Mason; a daughter, Melanie Kutchback, also of Mason; and two sisters, Kay Doerflinger and Susan Stier, both of Greensburg.
The funeral is 9 a.m. today at the Montgomery Community Baptist Church, 11251 Montgomery Road in Symmes Township. Burial is at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
