Carl Campbell, age 69, died at his home here at 2106 Campbell Drive Friday morning about 10:30. Although he had suffered with a heart condition, his death came suddenly and without warning.
Mr. Campbell was born here in St. Francis County, west of Caldwell on October 07, 1904 and was the son of Fannie Haynes Campbell and William J. Campbell and was a lifelong resident of the Forrest City area.
He was a member of First Baptist Church here; was a retired farmer: and a 32nd degree Mason. Mr. Campbell had served St. Francis County as Sheriff for 12 years, from 1953 until 1965.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Myrtle Davis Campbell, who he married in 1926 and one daughter, Mrs. William C. Gatling also of Forrest City and four grandchildren. He also leaves a brother, Tom Campbell of Caldwell and a sister Mrs. Dick Jayroe of Palestine.
Funeral service by Rev. T. K. Rucker and Rev. Jimmy Ervin were held at the First Baptist Church here today and burial will follow at Forrest Park Cemetery with Stevens Funeral Home in charge.PER MARILYN DICKSON-When James Carl Campbell, farmer and timberman, was elected to the important office of Sheriff and Ex-Officio Tax Collector of St.Francis County, he promised to faithfully conduct the duties of the office in a fair and impartial manner with the utmost efficiency. Sheriff Campbell, who was sworn in Jan.1,1953, is a quiet and unassuming official who has been faithful in all his business undertakings, loyal in friendship and upright in thought and deed.. He was born in Caldwell, the son of W.J. and Fannie (Haynes) Campbell. he recieved his formal education at Caldwell. In 1925 he was employed by the old Dixie Motor Company selling Star automobiles. From 1927-1929, he owned the Pierce Oil agency; 1930-1931, hauled gravel for the State Highway Dept.;1932, engaged in the timber business; and in 1941 started farming. He still supervises his farming interests. On May 1,1926 he married Miss Myrtle Davis, daughter of Charles and Nan (Hull) Davis of Forrest City., and to this union has been born a daughter, Dorothy Dean, now Mrs.W.C. Gatling. The Campbell's have two fine grandsons, Mark and James Gatling. Sheriff Campbell belongs to the First Baptist Church, of which he is President of his Sunday School Class and is a member of the Finance Committee..
