|Death: ||Dec. 1, 1961|
The first born son of 7 children born to Pantelis Sideratos and Eleni Sideridis (or Koulouroudis). His siblings were Konstantinos, Lambros Evgenios, Marouka, Theodora, Ioannis and Antonios. They were born and raised in the village of Dafnonas on Chios island which was then still part of the Ottoman empire. He and his brothers were all noted to be tall and strong men. He married Angerou Giannoulakis, daughter of Georgios Giannoulakis and Doukena Kambouras. He and Angerou had 9 children: Ioannis, Zenovia, Marika, Maria, Georgios, Nikolaos, Stylianos, Grammatiki and Irini.
His children Ioannis and Zenovia both died in childhood. His son George left for America at the age of 18 in 1917, followed 10 years later by his daughter Marika. His son Nikolaos was lost and given up for dead during the Balkan wars. His youngest child Stylianos (my grandfather) followed his 2 siblings to America in 1955.
In 1935, Dimitris was described as an illiterate laborer who stood 5 feet 7 inches with a medium complexion, gray hair and brown eyes. He travelled to the United States on board the SS Byron which departed from Piraeus, Greece and arrived at the port of New York in Jun 1935. He and his wife were travelling together, intending to remain in the U.S. permanently. They were going to stay with their son George at 5124 5th Avenue in Brooklyn, New York. He and his wife eventually returned to Greece. In the 1960's, of their remaining 6 children, 4 would die. Grammatiki, Stylianos, George and Marika passed in that order, not nearly reaching the age their parents had. He died on 1 Dec 1961 of cholecystitis at his home in the Mpourou neighborhood of Dafnonas. My mother remembers her grandfather with fondness as she spent her first 9 years living on the top floor of his beautiful circa 1897 home in Dafnonas.
