Death: Nov. 15, 1908

James "Jim" Ryan married Mary Ann "Polly" Wilemon 5 Jul 1866 in Monroe County, Mississippi. Children of James and Polly were; Sarah A. Ryan, William Russell Ryan, Mary J. Ryan, James Frances Ryan, Asa Ralls Ryan, Newton Jasper Ryan, Charles Joseph Ryan and Florence E. "Fannie" Ryan.

War record for James shows he joined the CSA Army Company C, 18th Ala Regiment at Cedar Grove, Alabama, along with two of his brothers, Wiliam Meredith and Francis Marion on 24 Jul 1861. Both lived through the war but their Dad, Peter S. Ryan did not.

"James M. Ryan was enrolled as a Corporal in Company A, 9th Tennessee Cavalry (USA) on 18 Jul 1863 at Nashville, Tennessee. He was reduced to the ranks (demoted from corporal to private) for a cause not stated on 6 Sep 1863. He deserted the regiment on 21 Feb 1864 at Springfield, Tennessee. After an absence of more than a year, he returned to duty on 10 Apr 1865 under the Presidential Amnesty Proclamation which was first promulgated in December 1863. The charge of desertion was dropped with James having been forgiven under the Presidential Amnesty program and James was mustered out on 11 Sep 1865 at the end of his original three year commitment."

We are sorry to report Uncle James Ryan, of Straight Mountain, critically ill. He has been sick for several months. Among other misfortunes he has lost his hearing. He is a faithful member of the Methodist church, A Mason and an Oddfellow. He is nearing the end and when this good old man shall have passed away the community will miss him.
