John Preston III was the son of John Preston and Rebekah Vickers. Born a Quaker in Buckingham, Bucks Co, PA near Buckingham MM.

John's family moved to Loudoun Co, VA in 1783 and were members of Goose Creek MM. In 1792, his family removed to South River Meeting in Lynchburg, VA where he was disowned by South River MM in 1798.

John married Lucinda Tansil abt 1801, likely in Virgina or nearby. Not much is known about the Tansil family, although there was a John Tansil who lived in Bute Co, NC by 1766, and Lucinda may belong to this family.

John moved to Columbiana County, OH by 1806, where he served under Capt Bradfield in the Columbiana Militia along with brother Amos Preston. Several of John's brothers also moved to Columbiana County from Lynchburg, VA.

By 1830, John had moved from Ohio to Union County, Indiana where he was listed with his children although without his wife Lucinda who died sometime before in Ohio or Indiana. His older brother Zenas Preston also lived in Union County until about 1837, being still a Quaker and member of Silver Creek MM.

Ancestral records list the death of John Preston in Liberty, Union Co, Indiana, and may be buried in Silver Creek cemetery, given his Quaker roots.
