Governor of the Dakota Territory. A businessman and banker, he was Chairman of the New Hampshire Republican party and campaigned for Lincoln's election. From 1862 to 1863 he was New England General Agent for the Postal Department. From 1863 to 1875 Ordway was Sergeant at Arms of the US House. He was a New Hampshire State Senator from 1875 to 1880. In 1880 he was appointed Governor. During his term he oversaw efforts to move Dakota's capital from Yankton to Bismarck, angering citizens in Yankton and Sioux Falls who had hoped it would be located in their cities. Because of negative sentiment against Ordway President Arthur replaced him in 1883. After leaving office, Ordway remained in Bismarck for several years, lobbying for the Northern Pacific Railroad and advocating against separate statehood for the counties that later became South Dakota. In the 1890's he returned to New Hamphshire, where he oversaw his investments and managed two large farms. (bio by: Bill McKern)
