Chiricahua Chief. Born the eldest son of Cochise, he succeeded to the leadership of his father's group with Cochise's death in 1874. In 1876 he agreed to move his people from the Apache Pass Reservation in Arizona to the San Carlos Reservation. That same summer, he accompanied the Apache treaty delegation to Washington, D.C. where he succumbed to pneumonia and was buried in the Congressional Cemetery. There followed, almost inevitably, rumors that he had been poisoned. A 1954 movie, Taza, Son of Cochise, offered a highly fictionalized rendition of his life.
