Garland was a lifelong resident of Medicine Mound TX, where he was a farmer and rancher. He also was employed by Georgia Pacific for 23 years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, beginning at the church in Medicine Mound where both of his parents were administrators and teachers.

Garland served in the U S Army in WWII and was a First Lieutenant in the Air Corps at the time of his separation. He received the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and theEAME Campaign Medal with three Bronze Service Stars. He was a B-24 Bomber Pilot, and received credit for 55 bombing missions. He was stationed in the Rome-Arno, Southern France, Germany and the United States. His photo is proudly displayed in the Veterans Room of the Hardeman County Museum in Quanah, Texas.

Garland was a man of high integrity and character and was loved by all who knew him. A quick, subtle sense of humor was his companion. He loved his family, cows, farm, community and country.

Survived by two daughters, 8 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren


preceded in death by another brother, Royce Caldwell.

A Celebration of Garland's life was held at Smith Funeral Home, Quanah TX on December 19, 2015. Honorary Pallbearers were Robin Caldwell, Royce "Sonny" Caldwell, Richard "Dickie" Caldwell, Jerry Caldwell, Morris Degan, Mike Evans and Bill Howard.
