James A. Atkins, son of Alfred and Harriot, was born in England. He emigrated to Canada in 1882, where he met Eliza Fitzthomas and they wed on October 5, 1885, in Toronto. James worked as a gardener and florist. The couple had their first child, Alfred, in 1885, followed by Rosa, Loyal, Gordon, Dahlia, Ethel, Melville and Pearl. James and Eliza raised the children as Methodists and later changed to the United Church following a major church unification. James A. Atkins died at his Earlscourt Ave. home in 1931.
