Elmer married Maudie May SMILEY / SMILIE in 1915.
He grew up in Missouri & Indian Territory and lived in Cherokee County, Kansas & Joplin, Jasper, Missouri area all his life.
He talked about how he'd like to see California & Arizona, but never found the time to getaway from his jack-of-all trades life in Joplin.
Son of Wilford Stevens & Sarah Jane Boring he was a miner, carpenter, teamster, and loved to work on engines & hear them roar again.
On hot summer mornings, I'd go help him mend broken fences of the widows of his friends & that's the most fun I can remember as a kid. He'd always make me wear a hat to keep the sun off of my head. (this seemed to boil my brains, but at least they didn't bake)
He often had silver coins for us. I had a large collection of dollars, halves, quarters, dimes in my collection.
He seemed to always be doing something for somebody else so they wouldn't know he'd done it.
I guess I learned that from him.
