Richard "Dick" Howard Schwinkendorf, 68, of Jensen Beach, died Tuesday, August 2, 2005, at his home.
He was born in Valparaiso, Indiana and graduated from Washington Township High School in 1955.
After attending Butler University he served in the U.S. Army from 1960-1962.
After moving to Oklahoma, he received his Bachelor's degree in accounting from Central Oklahoma University and was employed by Cities Service Gas and later retired from the Williams Companies, Tulsa, OK, as an accounting manager.
Following retirement in 1995, he relocated to Jensen Beach and soon became involved with the Martin County United Way. He served on the Martin County United Way Board of Directors, the Allocation Committee, and the Advisory Board for the Volunteer and Community Resource Center (VCRC).
For many years he was the warehouse manager for White Doves Holiday Project as well as the lead volunteer for the VCRC School Supplies for Students Drive. He was a member of Macy's Customer Advisory Board.
He received numerous awards for his volunteer work including both the National and State Points of Light Awards, the Scripps Jefferson Award, the Elks Man of the Year, and the Martin County United Way President's Award for Excellence.
Survivors include his partner of 43 years, Pete Thompson of Jensen Beach, FL; brother, Edward Schwinkendorf of Valparaiso, IN; sister, Laura Anderson of Sebring, FL; seven nieces and nephews; and stepmother, Dorothy Schwinkendorf of Valparaiso, IN.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Elsie.
A memorial service will be held Monday, August 8 at 3 PM, at First United Methodist Church in Stuart, with Reverend Phillip Short officiating.
