Richard served as a Oiler, S.S. Alcoa Pathfinder, Merchant Marines during World War II.

His next of kin, and probably Richard, resided in Buffalo, Erie County, New York prior to the war.

Richard was declared "Missing In Action" when the S.S. Alcoa Pathfinder was struck by a torpedo from German submarine U-181 off South Africa and sunk during the war. He was one of five crew members to be lost.

He was awarded the Mariner's Medal.

His remains were not recovered.
