Governor of Kentucky. During the War of 1812, he served under General Samuel Caldwell at the Battle of the Thames on October 5, 1813. He was a member of the Kentucky State House of Representatives between 1812 to 1835, and was Lieutenant Governor in 1836. Upon the death of Governor Clark, he became Acting Governor in 1839.

Abraham Lincoln delayed signing the District of Columbia Emancipation Act (1862) so Wickliffe could flee back to Kentucky with his slaves, who, Lincoln said, “would not be benefited by freedom.” (Diary of Orville Browning)
