The funeral for Twila June (Fox) Gardner, 93-year-old Conroe, Texas, resident, will be 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 18, 2006, at Henninger-Allen Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. John Jamieson will officiate. Burial will follow in North Lions Cemetery, Marshall, OK. Arrangements are under the direction of Henninger-Allen Funeral Home.
Twila was born June 21, 1913, in Kingfisher County, OK to Leo Kent and Rosa Etta (Hamiel) Fox and died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2006, at her home in Conroe, TX.
Separated at an early age from her mother, Twila was raised by her Grandma and Grandpa Fox. She participated in track, cheerleading, and was an actress in the church acting group who put on traveling plays. Twila returned home in eighth grade to nurse her stepmother, Hazel, who was dying of tuberculosis. Following the death of her stepmother, Twila began working as a waitress at about age 15 or 16. In 1937, Twila traveled to Galveston, TX, with her friend, Geneiva, to work as a waitress in a coffee shop. It was here that she met her husband Mac, who was working there as a busboy. The three of them then traveled by train to Louisville, and Twila and Mac on to Terre Haute, Ind. It was there that Grano Gardner gave them a ring for Twila and the money to use for a marriage license. They were married at home on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 25, 1937. Following the wedding they traveled back to Oklahoma to meet Twila's family. Cleo helped Mac get a job through a friend at a concrete plant in Baton Rogue, LA. Louis Mac was born there, much to the joy of his parents. Eventually they traveled back to Terre Haute, where Mac began working for Dupont. While working for Dupont they initially lived in Washington State. They then moved to Port Arthur, TX, where Luana Beth was born. The family subsequently traveled to Camden, S.C., and then Delaware. It was in Newark, Delaware that they finally settled down. Following Mac's death in 1992, Twila spent more and more time in Texas with Luana, eventually relocating there. Most recently Twila has been living with Luana at her home in Grangerland, TX. Twila was a very opinionated and strong- willed woman. She loved her family. Her hobbies included gardening, cooking, sewing, writing poetry and collecting elephants. She read her Bible regularly and always said that Jesus' words were the most important part.
She is survived by her daughter, Luana Beth Hawthorne of Conroe, TX; sister, Cora Lea; six grandchildren, Mary Frances Gardner of Habertown, PA, Louis Mac Gardner Jr., of Wilmington, DE, Michael Joseph Gardner of Bellcamp, MD, Joseph Martin Gardner of Wilmington, DE, Suzanne Marie Schroll of Hillsboro, OR, and Wendy Lee Oliver of Kingwood, TX; 11 great-grandchildren, Shannon and Stephen Duncan, Nicole, Megan, Kayla, Carly, Joseph Jr., Nicholas Gardner, Zoe Oliver, Brian and Kiley Schroll.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Cleo Myree Seiboldt and Naomi Juanita Hesse, brother, Mac Bruer Gardner, and one son, Louis Mac Gardner.
