At age 14, in 1858, he jumped ship in New Jersey after sailing through a hurricane. He slept in Central Park and spent some time in jail as a vagrant. He went on to own a couple of shoe stores with a partner and apartment houses in Queens. Due to illness and stuborness, he lost it all. He married Sophia Katz and had three children: Gustav Lehmann, (Julius) Henry Lehmann, and Willamina (Minnie) Lehmann Heidt. He became a citizen of the USA on October 2, 1876. He was married on 10-30-1870. His father's name was Christian Lehmann.

Julius F Lehmann died in his home, 640 Central Avenue. He was born in Germany and had been a resident of Brooklyn for 63 years. He was a shoemaker and a member of Goethe Lodge, 629, F & A.M. He is survived by two sons, Gustave and Henry, and a daughter, Mrs. Minnie Heidt.
