Fernando Cortez Beaman

US Congressman. One of the founders of the Republican Party. He was raised in New York and became an attorney in Michigan in 1838. Beaman was Lenawee District Attorney and Adrian City Attorney from 1843 to 1850. In 1854 he was a member of the Jackson, Michigan convention that founded the Republican Party, and he was a delegate to the party's first National Convention in 1856. Beaman was Mayor of Adrian in 1856 and Lenawee Probate Judge from 1856 to 1860. In 1860 he was elected to the first of five terms in the US House, serving from 1861 to 1871. He returned to his law practice and was again Lenawee Probate Judge from 1871 to 1880. In 1879 he was appointed to the US Senate seat left vacant by Zachariah Chandler's death, but he declined because of poor health. He also declined a seat on the Michigan Supreme Court and appointment as US Commissioner of Indian Affairs. Beaman retired at the end of his term as Probate Judge.
