Walter E. Hansgen
Birth: Oct. 28, 1919
Union County
New Jersey, USA
Death: Apr. 7, 1966
Departement du Loiret
Centre, France

Professional Auto Racer. Walt Hansgen was one of the best known American road racing drivers of the post-war era. He was a four-time SCCA National Champion and raced with distinction in Formula 1, NASCAR and at the Indianapolis 500 (where at age 44 in 1964 he was the oldest, and fastest, rookie to qualify for the 500 up to that time). The prototypical engineer-driver, Hansgen helped develop many of the greatest race cars of his era, first as lead driver for the Cunningham race team and later for John Mecom Racing. He was a lead driver for Holman-Moody Racing and was testing the Ford GT Mk2 at Le Mans when he crashed on April 2, 1966. He died in Orleans, France five days later. (bio by: Michael Argetsinger)
