Born in New York, Bernard (Ben) Herzbrun always loved drawing and trained as a draftsman. He enlisted and served in the Great War where he was sent to France. His Army duties included rising high in hot air balloons to draw the terrain, battlefields, trenches and troops before him, all the while being shot at by the enemy.

Following the war Ben used his GI benefit to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris where he earned his degree in architecture. He returned to New York City where he worked as an architect and artist. He designed many alphabets and his lettering can be scene on the exterior of the New York Public Library.

In 1922 Ben married Sadie Lynch in the Bronx. Sadie and Ben moved to Manhattan and had a son Herman in 1923. Tragically Sadie died hours after giving birth.

In 1932 Ben went to Hollywood, California with his brothers Henry and Walter, his mother Paula and his little son Herm.

Bernard Herzbrun became a motion picture production designer and art director for various studios including RKO, Paramount and Universal Studios. His brother Henry Herzbrun was a Vice-President, (and short-term President) of Paramount Studios. His brother Walter Herzbrun became a successful movie agent, representing many actors and actresses.

In California Ben married his second wife Eva Kann in March 1932.

Bernard Herzbrun served as Art Director on more than 200 films such as "Bend in the River", "Alexander's Ragtime Band" and "Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid". He received four academy award nominations for art direction during his career spanning the 1930s - 1960s. He has an extensive filmography of over 280 films. He is most known for his art direction in film noir.

Bernard Herzbrun worked on many films in his early years as part of teams where he was not credited. Ben told his son that he was art director for The Little Princess staring Shirley Temple. For fans of campy horror films, he was the art director for Creature From The Black Lagoon.
