Adams, Marion Francis Sr.,

Marion F. Adams, 78, a resident of Spokane for 14 years, formerly a merchant and banker of Harrington, died at Sacred Heart hospital, Spokane, at 4:30 AM Friday, April 2, 1937. Rosary was said at 8 PM Sunday at Hennessey & Calloway's chapel and funeral services were held at 9 AM Monday at St Aloysius church, Spokane, with the Rev J. D. Stack, S. J., officiating. The body was brought back to St Francis church, Harrington, where the casket was opened at 9 o'clock AM Monday, that his old Harrington friends might view the face of their pioneer friend and neighbor. The body was buried in St Francis Cemetery here at 11:30 AM. Pallbearers were: Tom Taylor, Jerry O'Brien, Charles Mady, William Gerraughty, Clare Mack and David McCulloch, all of Spokane. A number of complications contributed to Mr. Adams' death. He first contracted a light case of flu which, when checked, began developing pneumonia. This too was checked, and then he was attacked with gall bladder trouble, and then took hospital pneumonia, but his declining years prevented his responding to medical treatment. He was conscious and knew all members of his family up to the end. All surviving members of the family were present when his spirit departed its earthly abode. Surviving members of the family besides the widow, Lula, at the home, are: A. Wade Adams, foreman Transport Motor Co, Spokane; Mrs. John G. Weber (Marguerite), Uniontown, WA; Hubert W. Adams, S. J., Gonzaga University, Spokane; Guy A. Adams, owner of Riverside Club. A daughter, Ethel (Mrs. W. S. Pemberton) passed on several years ago at Harrington. Marion F. Adams was born December 31, 1858 near Springfield, KY, and was reared at his birthplace. He attended school at Rushville, IN for a year and a half and left home at the age of 21 for Texas where he worked two months, then spent a year and a half in CA. From there he went to MT for six months and returned to the Sacremento Valley in CA where he remained about three years. In 1885 he came to Washington Territory, homesteaded near Harrington, and after three months returned to his old Kentucky home. It was during a six months sojourn there that he met and married Miss Lula K. Wade, May 9, 1886. In June of that year he returned to WA with his bride and began farming near Harrington. He moved to Harrington from the farm in 1895 and engaged in the mercantile business for himself for the next eight or nine years, much of that time being associated with A. G. Mitchum. In 1903 he and Mr. Mitchum took John F. Green into the firm and they engaged in the banking business until 1909. Then he returned to the mercantile business and spent 13 years clerking for the Ellis-Miller Co, John H Morgan and Larrabee & Kramer. He disposed of his Harrington residence to August Timm Sr. and in 1922 retired and moved to Spokane where he has since resided. Mr. Adams was always a leading spirit in pioneer days and a booster for civic undertakings and for Harrington. He helped finance and build the St Francis Catholic church here and bought and gave to the catholics, St Francis cemetery, reserving a burial plot therein for himself and family. He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters. It was in 1936 that he and Mrs. Adams celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at their Spokane home. An interesting fact is, that Mr. & Mrs. Adams were born and reared in KY within 16 miles of one another. It is with a pang of regret that Harrington friends of Mr. Adams learned of his death. There was a time in pioneer days when his name was known to everyone in Harrington and pretty much all over the Inland Empire. He was a good citizen, a consistent Christian gentleman, and a loving husband and father. (Citizen-9 Apr 1937)
