In 1916, he appeared on Broadway in "Riveria Girl." In his six decade career, not only was he a gifted actor who appeared in over 300 movies, such as, Miracle on 34th Street," "The Foxes of Harrow," and "The Man in the Grey Flannel Suit," but he was a songwriter, newspaper columnist, and performed in "Die Fledermaus" for the San Fransisco opera association. He wrote for radio shows and articles for various magazines. On stage he replaced Lee J. Cobb in "Death of a Salesman" to rave reviews. He became a U.S. citizen in 1939.
