Photographer. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for his 1945 picture of the World War II flag-raising during the Battle of Iwo Jima, depicting one of the war's great moments of five Marines and a Navy corpsman struggling to raise a flag on top Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima. The image became a symbol of the spirit of the Marine Corps. The photo later became the inspiration for a bronze Marine Corps Memorial in Arlington, Virginia. (bio by: Elizabeth Reed)
