The following letter received by Colonel Thomas gives the particulars of another
murder by the Indians:

Lake George, September 12th, 1863

Colonel M T Thomas, Dear Sir:

It becomes my duty to report that Sergeant Edwards was killed yesterday by
Indians. The Sergeant and myself were on our way to Kingston for the purpose of
having the muster and pay rolls signed by the men. When about five miles beyond
Paynesville, we were fired upon from the bushes by the road side, and Sergeant
Edwards was killed. After an unsuccessful attempt to bring him off, I was obliged to
leave him. I returned to Paynesville and Lieutenant Tollington with seventeen men
immediately started in pursuit. We soon came upon their trail and found they had
ponies, although they were on foot when they fired at us. We followed this trail
until we came near Lake Calhoun, when we lost it. We still kept on however and
circled around the lake to the north and came out on Green Lake. We there came upon
another trail of two Indians, whose moccasin tracks were fresh in the sand. They were
evidently other Indians than those that fired upon us. We lost this trail after two
or three miles pursuit and night coming on we returned and came in to Manannah. This
afternoon Lieutenant Tollington starts out with fifteen or twenty men to resume the
pursuit.

Very Respectfully, Your obedient Servant,

M Q Butterfield, Captain, Company A, 8th Minnesota Volunteers

Sergeant Edwards' body was taken through town and to his family, who live at
Champlin, opposite Anoka.
