Frederick - Mass of Christian Burial for Luella Mary Achen, 73, Frederick, will be Saturday, Aug. 19, 2006, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Hecla, with DeWayne Kayser officiating. Burial will be at the Wayside Cemetery, Frederick, with Schriver's Memorial Mortuary & Crematory, Aberdeen, in charge of arrangements.

Luella passed away Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2006, at Avera Mother Joseph Manor in Aberdeen.

Luella Mary Hoffmann was born Oct. 18, 1932, on the family farm southwest of Bridgewater, S.D., to Frank and Henrietta (Schulte) Hoffmann. She graduated from Bridgewater High School in 1950. Luella attended nurses' training at St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen and then at St. Joseph's Hospital in Mitchell, graduating in 1953. She was employed at St. Joseph's Hospital in Mitchell until April 1954, and then at St. Francis Hospital in Columbus, Ga., and Evanston, Ill.

Luella married Alan Achen April 7, 1954, at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Bridgewater, S.D. In January of 1956, Alan was discharged from active duty and transferred to the South Dakota National Guard. They moved back to the family farm in the Frederick area until the fall of 1975, when they moved to Corning, Iowa. They returned to the family farm in 1982.

Luella was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Hecla where she served on Altar Society and as CCD teacher, lifetime member of NFO where she served as the district secretary for several years, a member of the Frederick Homemakers Extension Club and the PTA.

Preceding her in death are her parents, husband, Alan in December of 1995, one son, Stephen in January of 2004; stepfather, Ben Weber; one grandson, Jacob Margolies; and one infant grandson; one sister, Irene Gary; and one stepbrother, Virgil Hoffmann.

Surviving Luella are her children, Charles (Denice) Achen of Frederick; Francis (Denise) Achen of Elizabeth, Minn.; Catherine (Kim) Dorsey of Loup City, Neb.; Susan (Marc) Margolies of Aberdeen, S.D.; daughter-in-law, Nora Achen of Minot, N.D.; twenty-eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Four brothers, Jerome (Judy) Hoffmann of Alexandria, Minn.; Dennis (Colleen Nicol) Hoffmann of Riverside, Calif.; Eugene (Vonnie) Hoffmann of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Jerry (Barb) Weber of Dimock, S.D.; one sister, Donna Haugen of Iver Grove Heights, Minn. One brother-in-law, Gene Gary of Parkston, S.D., and one sister-in-law, Birdyne (Tom) Geffre of Maple Plain, Minn.
