Andrew was the son of James A. Calfee and Hannah Whitlock. He married Margaret J. Thompson. Andrew was a member of "Foley's Copperheads" during the Civil War. His unit was an independent company organized primarily by the efforts of Captain Richard B. Foley who lived on the upper waters of Camp Creek and known as company F, 151st Regiment, Virginia Militia. Andrew returned to farm in Clover Bottom after the war. He and his parents were founders of the Princeton Baptist Church.
