Elias Lewis Duncan
Birth: May 1, 1841
McDonough County
Illinois, USA
Death: Apr. 16, 1929
Jennings
Decatur County
Kansas, USA

Elias Lewis Duncan, son of Joseph and Nancy (Harris) Duncan, was born on 1 May 1841 in McDonough County, Illinois. By the age of eleven, his family had moved to Fountain Green Twp., Hancock County, Illinois. As a young man, Elias served as a private in Company I of the 11th Regiment of the Illinois Cavalry. Some of the places where the 11th Regiment served were Battle of Shiloh, Tennessee; Battle of Corinth, Mississippi; Parker's Cross Roads, Meridian Campaign; Siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi; Assault on Kenesaw, Georgia; Battle of Atlanta and Battle of Jonesboro. Elias was honorably discharged from his service.

On 8 March 1869, Elias married Nancy Jane Woodside, daughter of Hugh Goliher and Katherine (Wilson) Duncan. According to granddaughter Alma Burrious Dragoo, Elias and Nancy Jane eloped and married on a riverboat. Nancy Jane's father, Hugh, "nearly ran an old mule to death trying to get to the dock to head them off, but was too late". The following year, they were living in Henderson County, Illinois with their one-month-old daughter, Ella. In 1871 their daughter Catherine was born and in 1873 a third daughter, Leona, was born. On 7 December 1874, Leona died just five days short of her first birthday. Elias, Nancy and their daughters moved to Maryville, Nodaway County, Missouri where they lived for approximately ten years, during which time they had three more children: Cora Dell, Bert Lorenzo and Edward Ellsworth. In 1883, the Duncans moved to Republic County, Kansas then on to western Kansas in 1885, homesteading near Lucerne in Sheridan County. He operated a butcher shop in Lenora, raising the beef himself so he would have the freshest meat. He also carried the mail from Lenora to Lucerne. Elias retired from the farm during March 1902 and moved to Jennings in Decatur County where he lived out the remainder of his life.

From Elias' obituary "The body was laid to rest in Lucerne Cemetery. Mr. Duncan had passed on life's highway the rock that marks the highest point, and was with slow steps descending the western slope to sleep at its foot. When being weary, for a moment lay down by the wayside, took his burden for a pillow and fell into that dreamless sleep."

Elias and Nancy Jane had eight children: Mary Ella, Catherine Ann "Katie", Leona J., Cora Dell, Bert Lorenzo, Edward Ellsworth, Rosa E. (3 April 3 May 1885) and Grace Edith.

Elias died 16 April 1929 at the age of 87 in Jennings, Decatur County, Kansas. Four days later, he was buried next to his wife, Nancy, and near his daughters, Rosa and Cora, in Lucerne Cemetery.
