| Birth: | May 25, 1919 Campbellsville Giles County Tennessee, USA | | Death: | Jun. 10, 1995 Atlanta Fulton County Georgia, USA |  Sports Broadcaster, he was elected to the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Hall of Fame in 1979, inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame as a Broadcaster for the New York Mets and recipient of the Ford C. Frick award for broadcasting in 1988. He was also inducted into the New York Mets Hall of Fame in 1986, and won an Emmy award for lifetime achievement in 1991. Born in Tennessee, Lindsey enlisted into the Army in December 1941, when the US entered the war. He would serve in the 9th Infantry Division as a public relations officer. Following five years of military service, Lindsey left the Army at the end of the war to return to his home in Tennessee, where he served as a reporter for the Columbia Daily Herald in Columbia, Tennessee, before beginning his broadcasting career in 1948. Over Lindsey's career he would broadcast the Cotton Bowl for 25 years, and was the voice of Notre Dame Football for 13 years. He also worked for NBC, broadcasting college football and NBA basketball games. In 1962, he was hired by the New York Mets to broadcast their games along with Ralph Kiner and Bob Murphy. The three men would work together on radio and television broadcasts for the NY Mets from 1962 to 1978. Lindsey was known for his brightly colored sport jackets; it was said he owned over 335 sport coats. In 1979, Lindsey moved on to become a broadcaster for the San Francisco Giants for three years. In 1982, he retired from broadcasting and returned to Tennessee to teach broadcasting seminars at the University of Tennessee. The University of Tennessee baseball stadium was named for him in his honor. He died of complications of Parkinson's disease and pneumonia. (bio by: Sharon M ~~ May God Bless and Keep)
