On August 25, a KC-130 aircraft with US Marines returning back to Vietnam after a rest and relaxation leave in Hong Kong took off from Kai Tak airport when it veered off the runway, stuck a seawall and crashed in in Yautong Bay. Of the 71 passengers and crew on board there were 59 fatalities. It was later determined that the number one engine was delivering only partial power on takeoff.

LCpl Richard Jossendal was one of the passengers on the ill fated flight, in Vietnam he had been assigned to and was serving with H&S Company, 3d Battalion, 3d Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

His body was recovered from the sea and returned to Illinois for burial. Cause of death was a plane crash.
