Cassie Anna (seemed to prefer Anna as an adult) was the daughter of Ethan Allen Kizer and Poulena Rosina Haberstroh, who married on 3 Nov 1889 in Marshall County. Poulena and Ethan would bring six children into the world—Cassie Anna (Oct 1890), Minnie Blanche (24 Dec 1895), Noble Ethan (11 Mar 1900), Gilbert Roscoe (12 Apr 1903), Marshall Force (13 Feb 1907), and an unidentified child who was born and died sometime between 1891 and 1900.

I found Ethan and Poulena's family on the 1900 Census, living in Plymouth's Center Township. Ethan, aged 36, was farming for a living. Poulena, aged 35, reported that she had had four children, but that only three had survived to that census year. There with their parents were Cassie, aged 9, Minnie, aged 4, and Noble, aged 2 months. Also living with the family was 72-year-old widow Anna Kizer, identified as Ethan's step-mother. Indeed, after Ethan's mother's death in 1867, Ethan's father Peter Kizer had married Anna W. Wright on 15 Apr 1875. Peter had died on 23 Aug 1893.

On the 1910 Census, the family appeared living on Warsaw Rd. in Center Township, Plymouth, Marshall County. Ethan Kizer, aged 46, was busy with the farm. Poulena (Paulina on the record), aged 45, reported that she had had six children, and that only five were still alive. Those five were all there—Cassie, aged 20 and working in the city as a housemaid, Minnie, aged 24, Noble, aged 10, Gilbert, aged 7, and Marshall, aged 3.

In the fall of that same year, Cassie married Martin Trowbridge on 2 Oct 1910 in a private ceremony, with just family, that took place in the bride's home. Martin was the son of Alfred Leroy Trowbridge and Catharine Schroeder. Martin's father died when Martin was only twelve years old, and as the only son in the family, he had had to man up early in life. In the years preceding his wedding to Cassie, Martin was supporting his mother and sisters, working as an engineer in Plymouth's emery factory. The newlyweds moved in with Martin's mother at 421 Miner St. in Plymouth. Circa 1912, Cassie and Martin welcomed daughter Julia Pauline.

On his 12 Sep 1918 WWI draft card, Martin, aged 36, reported that he was living in Berkshire, Tioga Co., New York, and that he was farming. Wife Cassie Anna was noted as next of kin. He was described as being of medium height, and of stout build, with gray eyes and dark brown hair. Julia would have been about six or seven years old at the time.

I found Martin and Anna on the 1920 Census, living in Caroline, Tompkins Co., New York. Martin, aged 37, was in fact farming. Anna, aged 29, was home with 8-year-old Julia.

Four years after that census, Cassie would have learned of the death of her mother Poulena at age 60. She would miss seeing her three sons wed. Cassie's brother Noble married Phyllis Maurine Templin on 21 Dec 1928 in Goshen, Elkhart Co., Indiana. He eventually became a football coach for Purdue University.

Cassie's father Ethan eventually remarried, appearing with second-wife Susan on the 1930 Census. Cassie's two youngest brother were still living at home with their father and step-mother. Gilbert, aged 26, was the owner of his own jewelry store, and Marshall, aged 23, was in law school.

By the time the 1930 Census came around, Cassie, Martin and Julia had moved back to Indiana, and were living at 430 Pennsylvania Ave. in Plymouth. Martin, aged 48, had found a job as the foreman of a metal works. Anna, aged 39, was keeping house. Home with her was Julia, aged 18 and about to graduate from Plymouth's Lincoln High School as that year's valedictorian. She would be headed off to attend Indiana University in Bloomington later that fall, a Classics major.

The family was still living in Plymouth when the 1940 Census came around. Martin, aged 58, was an engineer/fireman. Anna, aged 49, and Julia, aged 28, were at home.

On his 27 Apr 1942 WWII card, Martin, aged 60, reported that he was living at the 430 Pennsylvania Ave. address in Plymouth, and that he was working for McCord Radiator Co. in Plymouth. Daughter Julia Trowbridge was noted as the person who would always know his address.

On 2 Oct 1960, Anna and Martin would have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Sadly, Martin died sometime that same year at age 78 or 79. Anna only lived another four years without her helpmate and companion, departing this earth in 1964 at age 73 or 74. Both were laid to rest next Martin's parents. When Julia died in 1981, she was laid to rest next to her father.
