Lucy Ann Gaylord and Senator Samuel Clarke Pomeroy were married on 23 Apr 1846 in Otisco, Onondaga, and had no children. They moved to the Kansas Territory where he was elected to the US Senate. After moving to Washington DC, Lucy became a leader in work "for the purpose of founding at the National Capitol an asylum for the freed orphans and destitute aged women whom the onward march of freedom has left to the care of the benevolent."
She died of typhoid before seeing the completion of the project.
