James Craig married Aminta C. Gowdy (or Goudy) on July 25, 1820 in White County. (Illinois Statewide Marriage Index) James S. Craig was the head of a family of 7 in the 1840 McLean County, Illinois federal census. In addition to James and his wife, there were 2 males, ages 15 - 19; 1 male, 10 - 14; 1 male under 5; & 1 female, 10 - 14.

The 1850 Old Town (south side) McLean, Illinois census lists James S. Craig as age 50, born in South Carolina. Aminta was listed as age 52, born in Tennessee. John W. was age 24, born in Alabama. Robert J. P. Craig, 13, and Leander E. W. Craig, 9, were both born in Illinois.

The 1855 McLean County, Illinois state census shows James S. Craig with a family of four. Aminta Craig died in 1858 and is buried in Garr Cemetery. It is probable that James is buried with her. However, there is an Illinois Statewide Marriage Index listing for the 19 July 1860 marriage of James S. Craig and Sarah Childs in McLean County.

Several Ancestry.com family trees record that James died in March of 1864 in Old Town Township, McLean County, Illinois. A record of his burial has not yet been found.

It is possible that his son, John, was the John Craig of LeRoy (McLean County) Illinois who enlisted in Co. I, 39th Illinois Infantry in October of 1861 and died on November 22, 1863 at Folly Island, South Carolina.
