H.V. "Mac" McElfresh

H.V. “Mac” McElfresh was born December 2, 1918 in Kansas City. He passed peacefully into the arms of his savior on September 25, 2015.
He spent much of his childhood in Los Angeles before relocating to Woodson, IL where he graduated from Woodson High School.
He met his future wife, Mary Lou Eskew in 1937 and married her in 1941. Mac trained and worked for Underwood Typewriter Co. Their son, Gary was born in Springfield, IL and shortly after the family relocated to San Diego along with other family members to work for Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Co. to build the B-24 Liberater. His daughters, Judy and Trudy were born while they lived in San Diego.
Mac joined the US Army in 1944. He was shipped to Europe where he served under General Patton in the battle of the Bulge. It was the coldest winter on record. When on night patrol, behind enemy lines, his unit came under heavy machine gun fire. He slid down an embankment and onto a mine. His men thought he was dead and left him behind. He crawled almost a mile back to the American lines.
After his discharge from the army he became a certified Orthotist working with artificial legs and arms and braces in San Diego.
He moved to Flagstaff in 1973 where he and Gary owned and operated Der Wienerschnitzel, now Rt. 66 Dog Haus.
Mac has three children, eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. He will always be loves.
