Former Phoenix Mayor, Camp Wood Ranch Owner
Succumbs to Long Illness; 71 Years Old
Prescott Evening Courier - May 4 1933

Word reached here this afternoon of the death today in Phoenix of Lon L Harmon, for years, a resident of this county and at the time he expired, an operator of the Harman Ranch at Camp Wood. He was 71 years old.

Harmon came to Tempe, Arizona in 1884 and was an uninterrupted resident of the state until he died. He acquired the Camp Wood property in 1904, it being his first investment in a ranch. He owned property in the Salt River valley, although he recently disposed of some of his holdings there. He always took a deep interest in the livestock industry of the state, and at one time, was president of the Arizona Cattle Growers' Association.

He was elected Mayor of Phoenix in 1922, but resigned the same year, due to a stroke of paralysis which almost claimed his life.

Harmon's election as Mayor of Phoenix, his first political venture, was by such an overwhelming majority that Democratic leaders throughout the state turned to him as a likely candidate for the governorship. He looked with favor at this movement in his behalf and was making preparations to enter the primary election campaign in 1923 when illness incapacitated him.

For a time after he was stricken, Mr Harmon almost was helpless, but with the aid of an iron will and a strong constitution, he regained the use of his body to some extent and could walk considerable distances with the aid of a cane. Lon was a familiar figure in Prescott, where after his removal to Phoenix, he always passed his summers here or at his ranch. He was one of the best known and most highly esteemed cattlemen in the state and held a wide acquaintance and a large list of friends in Yavapai County.

He is survived by his widow; one daughter, Mrs Leona Campbell; and two grandchildren.

About a month ago Mr Harmon was taken ill with stomach trouble, which necessitated an operation. His death was not unexpected.

Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
