He made his major league debut as a catcher with the Chicago Cubs on April 20, 1948. Traded to the Brookyn Dodgers mid season 1951, he was the catcher behind the plate in the final play off game when the Giants won the National League pennant. He remained a Dodger playing his last game on June 15, 1958, with a career 608 games, 360 hits, 35 homeruns, 192 runs batted in and a .227 batting average. He managed in the minors and was a pitching coach with the Dodgers, Senators and Mets. At the time of his death, he was a scout for the St. Louis Cardinals. Cause of death, cancer.
